Stromatolites provide a window to view the dawning of life on earth.

Before other life developed Stromatolites formed extensive reefs that are now found in fossil beds around the world.

Today,living marine Stromatolites survive only in Hamelin Pool and in the Bahamas.

Bahamas Stromatolites are similar to those found here,but are larger,grow in deeper water,and survive in waters of more normal salinity.

Structures similar to Stromatolites,called thombolites,are found in lakes in Western Australia's south-west.

Scientist studying Stromatolites have found that the layers of sediment show climatic changes throughout the ages.

Growth rings reflect changes in the length of days,angle of the sun and the rate at which the earth rotated.

【ストロマトライトとは？】

　地球に初めて酸素をもたらしたといわれている、ラン藻とよばれるバクテリアの一種です。
　　このラン藻は細い糸のような形をしていて、浅い海の底で群れになって生活します。
　　ラン藻はまわりにネバネバとした粘液を出し、水中に巻き上げられた砂のつぶをくっつけていきます。
　　その上に新しいラン藻が育ち、また粘液を出します。これを非常にゆっくりと長い間続けていきます。
　　粘液と砂つぶが層をつくり、丸い岩のようになったのが、ストロマトライトです。
     ストロマトライトを縦に切って中をよく見ると、ラン藻がつくった砂つぶの層がはっきりとみえるのです。
　
 【ハメリンプール】
　　35億年も前から地球に存在して酸素を出し続けているストロマトライトは、今も西オーストラリアで
　　実際に見ることができます。その海岸はハメリンプールといわれています。
　　毎日ほんの少しずつ成長をし、酸素を出し続けているわけですが、その成長量はほんのわずかです。
　　1年間に0.5ｍｍともいわれています。
